Say good-bye to excessive salt, preservatives, added starches, and all those things you can’t pronounce by making your own homemade taco seasoning. There’s a pretty good chance you have all the ingredients in your spice cupboard anyway and it really is so easy it’s almost stupid not to do it. If you’re thinking “well who wants to get out and measure 10 spices every time they make tacos” do what I did and make a big batch and jar it. I’ve done the math for you and the recipe below is good for 3-4 taco nights depending how spicy you like your tacos.
Homemade Taco Seasoning (Big Batch):
- 1/4 cup chili powder
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. oregano
- 1-2 tsp. salt (to taste)
- 1 tbsp.. black pepper
- 2 tbsp. cumin
- 2 tsp. paprika
- 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
Add all of the spices into a jar of your choosing, I used a jam sized mason jar (have I mentioned I love mason jars?) and it was the perfect size. Then shake it! Again, this batch of taco seasoning is good for 3-4 taco nights depending how spicy you like your tacos.
– Cook 1 pound of ground beef (or turkey, or chicken) and drain.
– Add 2-3 tbsp. of the Homemade Taco Seasoning and 3/4 cup of water, continuing cooking until liquid is absorbed.
– Serve with your favourite taco toppings.
My current favourite is tacos in a lettuce wrap! There is so much flavour in tacos you don’t even miss the tortilla wrap!

***It doesn’t even have to be about Pinterest per se. I mean, we were all already out there on the Internet researching stuff and looking up fun ideas before Pinterest existed. Then Pinterest came along and provided an awesome and easy way to organize all the time we waste surfing the Web into one tidy little package. So now, we go and ‘Pin’ all these amazing ideas on Pinterest, but how many do we actually follow through on? My challenge is to follow through with and document at least 1 each month (baby steps, right?)***
